When visiting San Diego, California I highly recommend to take one day out of your trip to visit Tijuana across the border in Mexico. It is easy to reach the border by car, Uber or the Trolley (light railway system in San Diego) and it is possible to go through border control by foot or car. I would highly recommend going on foot as it is easy to get public transport/Ubers either side of the border and you will travel through much quicker. On foot it is just 10-20 mins and by car at peak times it can take a few hours to get back through to California.

When you enter Mexico from California you find yourself in another world. For many Americans it is a destination to party as the night life is thriving not to mention at a fraction of the cost compared to California. If this is what you are after head to downtown Tijuana for endless bar and club options. Make sure to try a Michelada – a typical Mexican drink consisting of beer (cerveza in Spanish), tomato juice and chilli in a salt-rimmed glass. If that doesn’t appeal you cannot go through with a classic Margarita.
I would highly recommend to visit the Valparaiso Hot Springs whilst you are there. A day pass is just $10 and a couples hot mud treatment only $40 for 2 hours! Even if you do not pay for a treatment you can enjoy the hot springs as part of your day package and have full access to the swimming pools outside where you can cool off after being in the heat.
It goes without saying that you should not leave Tijuana without sampling the street tacos. All I’m saying is you haven’t tried tacos until you have has tacos in Mexico. π
